From an Idea to a Finished Metal Product – How a Custom Order Is Completed
A custom metal product order begins long before the actual cutting, bending or welding. To ensure that the final result is accurate, functional and suitable for its intended application, the product’s purpose, dimensions, material, expected loads and visual requirements must be clarified from the outset. The better the initial information is prepared, the easier it is to avoid changes and additional costs during production.
There is no universal solution when it comes to the custom manufacturing of metal products. Every project has its own technical characteristics and operating conditions. An order may begin with a completed drawing, a sketch, a sample or even an idea that still needs to be developed. The main objective is to identify a practical manufacturing solution that combines reliability, reasonable cost and high-quality execution.
Discussing the Idea and Defining the Technical Requirements
The first step is to clarify what the product must do and in what environment it will be used. Its exact dimensions, required strength, installation method, production quantity and acceptable tolerances must be defined. If the product will form part of a machine or structure, all mounting holes and contact surfaces should be planned in advance.
The appropriate material is also selected at this stage. Steel is preferred for higher loads, stainless steel is suitable for moisture and aggressive environments, while aluminium offers low weight and a modern appearance. Making the correct choice from the beginning prevents unnecessary expenses and ensures that the finished product meets the actual operating conditions.
Preparing the Drawing and Selecting the Manufacturing Technology
Once the main requirements have been clarified, a technical drawing or production file is prepared. It defines the contours, openings, bends, welded joints and all important dimensions. A properly prepared design makes it possible to identify inconsistencies in advance that could otherwise complicate installation or assembly.
Depending on the geometry, the components may be produced through metal laser cutting, machining or another suitable method. If the project includes three-dimensional shapes, the cut parts proceed to CNC sheet metal bending. The sequence of operations is also planned at this stage to achieve accurate dimensions and efficient material utilisation.
Assembly, Surface Treatment and Quality Control
After manufacturing, the individual components are assembled by welding, bolting or other mechanical connections. Their geometry, dimensions, stability and correct alignment are inspected. Products with doors, covers or moving parts are tested to ensure smooth operation and convenient future use.
The final processing may include grinding, cleaning and powder coating for protection and a finished appearance.
