How to Prepare a File for Metal Laser Cutting
A high-quality laser-cut result begins before the metal sheet is placed on the machine. A properly prepared file allows the parts to be cut accurately, without unnecessary corrections or delays. When a drawing contains broken lines, duplicate contours or incorrectly specified dimensions, this may lead to errors, material waste and the need for additional processing.
Files for metal laser cutting are usually prepared in a vector format that describes the geometry through lines and curves. DXF and DWG are suitable formats because they can be processed by specialised software and used to create the machine program. Before sending the file, it should be carefully checked and contain only the information required for cutting.
The Contours Must Be Closed and Free of Duplicates
Each part should consist of clearly defined and fully closed contours. Even a very small gap between two lines may prevent the software from recognising the shape correctly. Duplicate lines can also cause problems because the machine may pass over the same area twice. This increases the processing time and may damage the edge of the part.
The file should not contain construction lines, dimensions, frames or text unless they are also intended to be cut or marked. All elements should preferably be drawn at full scale and use the same unit of measurement. This prevents a part measuring 100 millimetres from being interpreted as 100 centimetres and avoids the need for additional scaling.
The Material and Its Thickness Affect the Final Result
The type and thickness of the material, together with the required quantity of parts, should be specified when the file is submitted. The shape that can be cut successfully depends not only on the drawing but also on the characteristics of the metal. Very small holes, extremely narrow slots and contours positioned too close together may need to be adjusted according to the thickness of the sheet.
If the parts will be bent after cutting, this should be considered during the design stage. Their dimensions and the positions of the holes must be coordinated with the bend lines. Combining laser cutting with CNC press brake bending makes it possible to manufacture finished metal components with an accurate shape and consistent repeatability.
