Laser Cutting of Stainless Steel and Aluminium
Laser cutting is an efficient technology for manufacturing precise components from stainless steel and aluminium. Both materials are widely used in the production of enclosures, panels, decorative elements, machine components, control cabinets, supports and custom-designed products. Achieving a high-quality result, however, requires the correct settings for the type of metal, its thickness and the requirements of the finished component.
Professional metal laser cutting makes it possible to produce complex contours, small holes and narrow slots with high accuracy. The process is controlled by a digital file, ensuring reliable repeatability for both individual components and production batches. Proper project preparation reduces the need for additional mechanical processing and simplifies subsequent operations.
Specific Requirements for Cutting Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is selected for its corrosion resistance, strength and professional appearance. During laser cutting, the heat-affected area must be limited to produce clean edges and preserve the quality of the surface. The appropriate assist gas helps remove molten metal from the cutting zone and reduces the formation of an oxidised layer along the cut edge.
For products with visible surfaces, the protective film must be suitable for the process so that the component is not damaged or contaminated. After cutting, light cleaning or the removal of minimal sharp edges may be required. A precise cut is particularly important for components that will later be welded, assembled or polished.
Aluminium Requires Accurate Parameters and a Stable Process
Aluminium is lightweight, corrosion-resistant and suitable for products where reduced weight is a significant advantage. The material reflects a large amount of light energy and dissipates heat quickly, so cutting requires suitable equipment and precisely selected parameters. Incorrect settings may result in uneven edges, attached molten material or incomplete penetration.
A well-controlled process produces accurate holes and contours without applying mechanical pressure to the sheet. This is particularly important for thin panels and delicate elements that can easily deform during conventional processing. After cutting, aluminium components may proceed through CNC sheet metal bending, welding or additional finishing.
File Preparation Determines the Accuracy of the Finished Component
For a reliable result, the drawing must contain closed contours, correctly defined dimensions and sufficient distances between openings and edges. The material thickness, cutting width and subsequent manufacturing operations must also be considered. For products that include bends, the position of each opening must be coordinated with the bending lines and radii.
