Welded or Bolted Metal Structures – Which Solution Is More Suitable?
When designing a metal structure, one of the main questions is how the individual elements should be connected. The most common choice is between welded and bolted joints. Both options can provide the required strength and reliability, but they are suitable for different manufacturing, installation and operating conditions.
In professional metal structure manufacturing, the decision should not be based on price alone. The expected loads, dimensions of the structure, transportation requirements, installation conditions and the need for future disassembly must all be considered. Choosing the correct type of connection simplifies production and installation and reduces the risk of problems during operation.
When a Welded Structure Is the Better Choice
Welded joints create a rigid and compact connection between individual metal elements. They are suitable for frames, supports, machine bases, enclosures and structures that are intended to remain permanently assembled. When correctly executed, welds distribute loads evenly and allow the production of components with a clean appearance and no visible fasteners.
This type of structure is often manufactured entirely in a workshop, where the parts can be positioned and fixed accurately. The finished product can then be cleaned, ground and, where necessary, prepared for powder coating. The main disadvantage is that the completed structure may be more difficult to transport and usually cannot be easily dismantled or modified.
When Bolted Connections Are More Practical
Bolted structures are suitable when the individual elements need to be transported separately and assembled on site. This is particularly useful for large frames, platforms, staircases, canopies and structures that cannot be delivered in a fully assembled condition. Installation can be completed without welding on site, reducing the need for specialised equipment and additional fire safety measures.
Another advantage is the possibility of dismantling, relocating or modifying the structure. If damage occurs, an individual element can be replaced without reworking the entire product. For a reliable result, however, the holes and connecting plates must be manufactured with high accuracy, for example through metal laser cutting. Incorrect positioning can make assembly difficult and create unwanted stresses in the structure.
A Combined Structure Is Often the Most Efficient Solution
In many projects, a combined approach is the most practical option. Individual modules are welded under controlled workshop conditions and then connected with bolts at the installation site. This combines the strength and accuracy of welded assemblies with the easier transportation and faster installation provided by bolted joints.
