When to Choose CNC Turning and When to Choose CNC Milling
When manufacturing metal parts, the choice between CNC turning and CNC milling mainly depends on the shape of the component and the operations that need to be performed. Both technologies provide high precision, excellent repeatability and the possibility of producing both individual parts and larger series. However, they operate in different ways and are suitable for different manufacturing tasks.
During turning, the workpiece rotates while the cutting tool removes material from its surface. During milling, the workpiece usually remains stationary while the rotating cutting tool moves around it. Choosing the right technology reduces machining time, avoids unnecessary operations and helps achieve a more competitive final price.
CNC Turning for Cylindrical and Rotational Parts
CNC turning is the preferred solution when the part has a round, cylindrical or conical shape. Professional CNC turning services can be used to manufacture shafts, bushings, axles, washers, flanges, rollers and other components whose main surfaces are arranged around a central axis.
The technology allows the precise machining of external and internal diameters, grooves, threads and holes. It is particularly effective for parts that require good concentricity and an accurate relationship between their individual diameters. CNC turning is also suitable for serial production because, once the program and machine have been set up, identical parts can be manufactured with consistent precision and quality.
CNC Milling for Complex Shapes and Different Surfaces
CNC milling is more suitable for parts with flat surfaces, channels, pockets, holes and complex geometric shapes. A professional CNC machining centre can be used to manufacture housings, plates, supports, brackets, machine components and other products that need to be machined from several sides.
Milling enables the accurate positioning of holes, thread cutting and the production of parts with specific contours. It is the appropriate choice when the component does not have a primarily rotational shape or when multiple operations must be performed on different surfaces. Thanks to computer-controlled machining, excellent repeatability can be achieved even with complex projects.
When Both Technologies Need to Be Combined
Some metal parts cannot be completed using only turning or only milling. For example, a cylindrical component may first be shaped on a CNC lathe, after which holes, grooves or flat mounting surfaces can be milled into it. In such cases, combining both technologies provides the required geometry, accuracy and functionality.
