How Weather Conditions Affect Steel Structures
Steel structures are reliable, durable and suitable for many types of buildings and facilities, but their long-term performance depends directly on the conditions in which they are used. Wind, snow, moisture, temperature changes and aggressive environmental conditions can affect the load-bearing capacity, stability and appearance of the structure.
For this reason, climatic factors must be considered from the design stage. This makes it possible to select suitable profiles, connections, protective coatings and installation methods that ensure reliable performance throughout the service life of the structure.
Wind and Snow Create Additional Loads

The larger the façade and roof areas, the more important it is for the structure to be correctly dimensioned and stabilised. Moisture and Corrosion Can Shorten the Service Life
Moisture is one of the main factors affecting unprotected steel. Rain, snow, condensation and high humidity can gradually lead to corrosion. Areas around connections, welds, fasteners and locations where water can collect are particularly vulnerable.
Protection begins with proper preparation of the metal surface and the selection of a suitable coating. Depending on the operating conditions, anti-corrosion systems, galvanising or powder coating may be applied. The structure should also be designed so that water can drain freely and does not remain inside closed profiles or hard-to-reach areas.
Temperature Changes Require Proper Design
Metal expands when heated and contracts when cooled. In large structures and environments with significant temperature differences, these movements can create internal stresses if suitable connections and expansion solutions have not been provided. This is especially important for outdoor facilities, roofs and structures exposed to direct sunlight.
